Mosquito Lagoon Fishing

Got a taste for redfish? If anyone can guide you to the right spot to catch redfish for your dinner, we’re betting it’s Captain Karty Sills. This New Smyrna Beach-based lagoon fishing captain has been guiding anglers around the Mosquito Lagoon for a decade now and he’s on a first name basis with most of the fish. At least the ones he’s caught - and that is quite a few! Captain Karty also targets speckled seatrout (aka spotted trout) If it’s summer time, he’ll be offering them pigfish, a live bait that makes a croaking sound, and attracts schools of the sea trout. “Pigfish are like candy to Spotted Trout," says Captain Karty. With that croaking sound, it’s a wonder they don’t call ‘em frogfish! The baitfish are related to grunts. Apparently, red drum can croak, too. It's a noisy business, but delicious.

This is a fascinating part of Florida - in a state that boasts some of the best fishing in the hemisphere and some of the most interesting and unique eco-systems (the Everglades, for example) the Indian River Lagoon and its northern most tip, Mosquito lagoon, is an area of incredible biodiversity - there are more than 400 species of fish, and more than 450 species of shrimp and crabs, as well as some 260 species of mollusks. The estuary overlaps two climatic zones - temperate to the north - which means there are freezes - and sub tropical to the south; which contributes, no doubt to the biodiversity. That diversity extends to the surrounding lands which are most refuge and the islands - the estuary is a host to a huge number of birds, for example.
